A healthy dose of #goodness is going on in Kansas.
Is it a whimsical lark or a great lesson in civics? Four of the candidates for the 2018 Kansas Gubernatorial are under 18 years of age.
The teens are:
Jack Bergeson – Democrat. Jack is 16 years of age.
Tyler Ruzich – Republican – Tyler is 17 years of age.
Dominic Scavuzzo – Republican – Dominic is 17 years of age.
Ethan Randleas – Republican – Ethan is 17 years of age.
Four teens running for Governor of Kansas? According to the director of elections within the Kansas secretary of state’s office, “Under Kansas law, there is no law governing the qualifications for governor, not one,” said Bryan Caskey, direct or elections. Caskey continued, ““So there’s seriously nothing on the books that lays out anything, no age, no residency, no experience. Nothing.”
Looks like these four young men are good to go.
I wish them the best of luck, and thank each of them for jumping into the deep end of the ocean and involving themselves in the election process, no mater how whimsical, they are showing up, and are setting an example for youth across the nation.
That lesson? Get engaged, Democracy requires each of us to do our part. In a world where action talks, Kansas should consider themselves fortunate.
Now, is Kansas ready for them is probably the more pertinent question?
